CRM MA researchers present drone project at China Camp State Park

China Camp Village is on the very edge of San Francisco Bay and subjected to growing risk of damage from sea level rise and increasing wave action. California Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks) reports that it is one of the “earliest, largest, and most productive Chinese fishing villages in California''. Researchers from the SSU’s Anthropological Studies Center, including graduate students Dana Richards and James Hercher, create 3D digital models using drone imagery of the village in its current condition. These models can be used to provide a snapshot of this resource’s condition in 2023 and also as a form of digital outreach and preservation. Dana and James wrote about this project in State Parks’ weekly newsletter and presented a poster at the 2024 Society for California Archaeology annual meetings.
